Lights and Textures

SMYAH: Besides making music for myself, I also compose for films, immersive exhibitions and other audio visual projects. I launched Sound in Picture back in 2018 with the idea to find new ways of collaborating both worlds. It’s already been years but it feels like we’re only just starting! I want to thank Martin Yotov for playing the trombone and sea conch on the track Caverns and Alexander Gegov for the trumpet, clarinet and flute on Movements, it’s always a pleasure to work with musicians and expand horizons.

Mint Colibri: Photography is my big passion in life! I always have at least one camera with me and darkroom work is a big part of my creative process. Learning new alternative techniques and experimenting is what I enjoy the most.

Mint Colibri: Listening to “Caverns” and “Movements” for the first time I had a sense of motion and fluidity. I therefore decided to create images that had a connection to water and an ephemeral sense of feeling. For the same reason I decided to use a darkroom technique where, when you put the paper into the developer, you just let it stay still. Normally you would agitate the developer bath but by letting it sit still the developer creates a thin layer, almost like a veil over your image. This adds to the sense of fluidity and motion. Small things like that, to connect the process of how the image is made to a feeling that I pick up from the music, is what brings me creative joy!

Mint Colibri: My photography is almost always connected to nature somehow. I live next to the forest and it is both my second living room and studio. I often photograph in black and white and light and texture is often the thing that decides what ends up on the photo. I truly enjoy creative collaborations because it pushes me to go outside my own box, take in someone else’s creative world and merge it with my own. I have previously been collaborating with composers, authors and other photographers. To see more of my work please visit my webpage www.johannalronn.photography or my instagram @mintcolibri
